Bone Marrow Biopsy

If you received SEDATION for the procedure:

  • (Examples of sedative drugs would be Versed, Demerol or Ativan)
  • You should not drive or operate dangerous machinery or do anything that requires mental alertness for 24 hours.
  • Observe for excessive sleepiness, restlessness, confusion, dizziness and impaired physical coordination and mental alertness.

 

Care of the Bone Marrow Biopsy Site:

  • The wound from the bone marrow biopsy is a small puncture wound that does not require sutures and only requires a sterile pressure dressing for protection for 24 hours.
  • Keep sterile pressure dressing clean and dry for 24 hours.
  • Leave sterile pressure dressing in place for 24 hours.
  • Check dressing for bleeding that has soaked through the pressure dressing for up to 24 hours.
  • If bleeding has occurred, apply pressure and ice to stop the bleeding.
  • Notify your doctor if you are unable to stop bleeding after 30 minutes.
  • You may take Tylenol or Advil as directed for minor pain and discomfort.
  • Notify your doctor if the pain has not resolved within 48 hours or if you are experiencing any new symptoms after the procedure.
  • Notify your doctor if any signs of infection occur at the site such as redness, swelling or temperature greater than 100.5.
  • Bruising at the site can be a potential expected occurrence.
