Breast Pumping Log

During the first few days you may obtain more milk for your baby by hand expressing milk. Colostrum is thicker so the suction of a pump may not be adequate. Give that a try and also begin to use your breast pump. You may pump very little (drops) or nothing at all the first few expressing/pumping sessions. Do not be discouraged - continue to pump. Pump 8-10 times daily for 15-20 minutes each time. Pumping intervals do not need to be evenly spaced. Use hand expression while pumping to obtain more milk. Gradually increase suction levels from low up to your highest level of comfort. PUMPING SHOULD NOT HURT!

If you are having any nipple tenderness at all – please decrease the maximum level of suction. Pump 8 -10 times a day and you will begin to see a gradual increase in the amount. Wash breast pump kit with hot, soapy water, rinse well and dry with paper towels after each use. Sterilize pump parts by boiling once daily and continue after discharge for as long as your baby remains in NICU. Use the target amount as your guide. If you are not obtaining that much, add more pumping sessions. Or get advice from the lactation consultant.
